I'm preparing to take some Canon HF100 AVCHD FULL HD 1920x1080 footage and edit them in my dual-core Mac, hopefully with Kdenlive. Kdenlive relies on ffmpeg and therefore, I thought, can't edit AVCHD files directly because ffmpeg can't recognize these files. Just like I thought, these AVCHD footage doesn't quite import into Kdenlive(0.7.5) properly. There is no picture and audio is not synced. If it's not supported, I'm not really concerned about that at this point. I'm fine with converting AVCHD to something else that workable with Kdenlive and Googled for a simple way to convert AVCHD MTS (or M2TS) files to some other more friendly format. Ok, you will be faced with many AVCHD Converters out there from Internet, but now I'm concerned on how to minimize quality loss during the conversion.
So I tried several MTS converting programs and ended up with MTS/M2TS Converter produced by a company named Aunsoft. The program is the best with output quality and aspects overall among the several free copies I've tried. One big advantage of this AVCHD converter is that it's also a wonderful MTS joiner capable of merging multiple MTS or M2TS files into one single video. With tons of MTS clips in my hand, the program did save a lot of time for me.
Here I will show you how to exactly convert AVCHD to Kdenlive .
1. Drag and drop AVCHD-MTS files into the program. You can also click "Add" button to load MTS or M2TS files into the app. Then you will face the interface as below.
2. (Optional)Deinterlace AVCHD files. Follow "Editor"> "Effect" and tick the checkbox of "Deinterlacing" and you will get a sharper image. Check "Apply to all" to deinterlace all your imported files.
3. Choose output format for Kdenlive. In my case, I simply choose AVI from "Common Video" section from "Format" drop-down list. More than that, Aunsoft AVCHD Converter provides with many other options for your different devices or purposes, such as HD Video, iPod, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, PSP, Zune, Audio output, Flash Video, etc. You can also custom your destination folder for output videos in "Export to" list.
4. Join MTS files (optional) and convert MTS to Kdenlive . Before you start conversion, you can check "Merge into one file" to combine multiple AVCHD files together and output to one single video.
