At todays media event, one of the additions in iPhone firmware 4.0, that Apple announced, was multitasking. Multitasking will allow 3rd party application (apps you get of of the app store) to run in the background. This will be especially nice for music apps, where you will be able to continue to listen while doing other things on your iPhone.
